„Maria Lassnig. The Future is Invented with Fragments from the Past“

Municipal Gallery of Athens

7 April – 16 July 2017, Athens

Simultaneously with documenta 14 in Athens the exhibition “Maria Lassnig. The Future is Invented with Fragments from the Past” is opening at the Municipal Gallery of Athens, one of the most illustrious art institutions in the country.

The show is the last exhibition project that Maria Lassnig was able to plan personally with the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. In focus are significant works reflecting the artist’s relationship to classical antiquity, mythology and to the extraordinary Greek landscape.

“Mythology with Maria Lassnig was always immanent as a mental journey. Its interpretation and re-‐interpretation form a central linchpin in her work and was continually drawn on as reference. Thanks to the interest of Denys Zacharopoulos, artistic director of the Municipal Gallery of Athens and great enthusiast for Austrian art, it is possible for us to exhibit this project in an ideal location. Athens of course
stands for much that is past, but in today’s situation also for the pulsating present and the gravity of the European question.”
